The Government of Somaliland has warned citizens to prepare for heavy rainfall expected to affect most parts of the country. The government has sent notices to its agencies, electricity companies, security forces, and the public, urging all to get ready for climate-related emergencies.
Barkhad Jaamac Batuun, Minister of Information, Culture and Public Awareness and government spokesperson, said the government is sharing with the public the climate warnings issued by its agencies. He called on residents to prepare for the expected rains and to take the precautions needed to avoid the dangers that heavy downpours can bring.
The government has also instructed electricity companies to prepare for the changing weather conditions. The aim is to reduce the risks that rain poses and to limit its effect on electricity services.
The warning also addresses road travel. Authorities have advised that vehicle movement may need to be restricted when conditions require it, in order to protect public safety.
Regional leaders and government officials have been urged to monitor the situation closely and to hold regular meetings on the weather and on the steps needed to protect the public.
The government has asked residents to follow official warnings from government agencies and to stay away from high-risk areas while the forecast heavy rains continue.
